Johnny has Osteosarcoma🙁

Hi everyone!
I’ve been all over the internet trying to find the best protocol for Johnny, my 13 year old Beagle. He was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on his left ankle bone on 3/11/19. He saw his Vet on 3/5/19 for an exam because he had been limping for at least a week. Vet took a Radiograph, Chemistry CBC Blood Panel, and Lab Urinalysis. We got the results on 3/11/19 with the diagnosis of bone cancer-Osteosarcoma. His lab work was good and his X-ray showed no Metastisis in the lungs. The only option he gave us was amputation of the Hind Leg. On my internet search the first solution I found was to put Johnny on a Raw Ketogenic Diet through Keto Pet Sanctuary. So that’s what I’ve been feeding him since 3/12/19.

He was scheduled for his amputation on 3/27/19. I cancelled it and made an appointment with an Oncologist for Tuesday 4/2/19. I read that he may be a candidate for Radiation Therapy.

So here we are almost a month since his diagnosis and all I’ve been doing is feeding him a Raw Ketogenic Diet.

Now I’m reading that if your dog has Cancer not to feed him Raw.

So many options! So far Johnny has not exhibited any pain. He just limps around and sleeps a lot. He loves his raw food!

I have noticed that his tumor has grown a little.

See what the Oncologist will offer. She said she has several options.

Yes, pet cancer information can be overwhelming! You are dong the right thing by meeting with an oncologist. Whether or not you decide to pursue any treatment, at least you will have the information you need to make an educated decision about what is best for him.

Just try to keep in mind that the pain of bone cancer is horrific, so it’s important to act quickly OK? He needs strong pain medication if he’s not already getting it. Anytime a dog limps, the pain has gotten so bad that they cannot hide it any longer.

As for the nutrition aspect of pet cancer…we have lots of articles in our Tripawds Nutrition blog:

And one of the reasons that raw diets for pets with cancer are discouraged, is that when a pet is undergoing chemotherapy their immune system is weakened. This puts them at risk of salmonella poisoning, which may happen on a raw diet. However, some pet parents have continued feeding raw during dog cancer treatments, with their vet’s blessing, and didn’t run into any problems.

Let us know how the onco visit goes OK?
